Spec Comparison of the Xiaomi Fimi X8 SE 2020 and the PowerVision PowerEgg X
Here we compare two very different looking camera drones by Fimi and PowerVision.
The PowerEgg-X by Powervision is a unique looking camera drone and has some unique features.
Xiaomi Fimi's X8 SE 2020 is the second iteration in their X8 SE line-up and is a more standard looking folding arm camera drone.
Both aerial photography drones were released in 2020 with the Fimi being released in summer of this year, making it one of the newest camera drones on the market.
Physical Comparison
In their smallest form, the Fimi X8 SE 2020 folds it's arms in, making it an oblong shape and it gives it a length of 21cm across the top diagonally. The PowerEgg X is different in that it has removable arms but with the arms attached it is 42cm in diameter.
When they are in their smallest form with arms attached there is a considerable difference in size, from 1.5L for the Fimi X8 SE 2020 and nearly 4L in volume for the PowerEgg X, a total volume of 38404cm³.
Even though there are big differences in size, mostly because of such long arms on the PowerEgg X, the weight is not much different, both coming in under 1KG and a total weight of 862grams for the PowerEgg-X and a total weight, ready to fly weight of 765grams for the Xiaomi Fimi X8 SE 2020. That is a difference of about 100grams, so not much in it.
The PowerEgg X can also be removed from it's arms and used as a gimbal camera, similar to that of the Fimi Palm and the DJI Osmo Pocket. It is bulkier but the body of the camera drone because a camera gimbal that is handheld and includes the same non-flight features that it can use in the air, such as tracking, etc.
Performance Comparison
In terms of top speed, they are identical, offering 65kmh as the max speed for both camera drones.
The PowerEgg X is unique with its ascent and descent speeds, offering 18m/s ascent speed and 10m/s descent speed in sport mode. This is by far the fastest camera drone on the market when you take in to account its flying, ascent and descent speeds together.
The Fimi X8 SE 2020 has an OK 5m/s ascent speed and 4m/s descent speed.
Although it can fly up and down quicker, the PowerEgg-X has a lower max wind speed tolerance of 36kmh. The Fimi X8 SE 2020 is capable of flying in wind speeds of up to 50kmh, which is 14kmh more.
The transmission distance is not as good on the PowerEgg X, with a 5km range, compared to the stated 8km on the Fimi X8 SE 2020.
The flight times are both satisfactory, with the Fimi X8 SE 2020 having a 35 minute flight time and the Power Egg X having a max flight time of 30 minutes.
You get obstacle avoidance with the PowerEgg, in the downward and forward directions, but nothing with the Fimi X8 SE 2020.
Photo and Video Comparison
The camera field of view on both camera drones is slightly different, with the Xiaomi Fimi X8 SE 2020 offering 80° degrees field of view and the PowerEgg X offering 78° degrees FOV. At the same level in the sky you should see slightly more with the Fimi than on the PowerVision PowerEgg X because of these extra 2 degrees.
The bitrate between the two is slightly different as well, with the Fimi offering higher bitrate video files of 100 mbps compared to the 75 mbps of the PowerEgg. This doesn't mean bad or low quality video. We are seeing fantastic video quality between 50-75 mbps on many of the cameras we have tried here at Action Camera Finder.
The image sensor size is slightly larger on the Fimi with a 1/2.6" sized image sensor. The PowerEgg offers a slightly smaller 1/2.8" image sensor which is approximately half a millimetre smaller diagonally than the Fimi X8 SE 2020 image sensor.
They both take 12 MP photos and can save as raw files and JPEG.
In terms of videography and drone film making, you get 1080p with slow motion frame rates on both, up to 120fps in the case of the PowerEgg X and 4K video recording at 30 fps for the Fimi ad 60FPS for the PowerEgg.
Not many camera drones offer 4K at 60fps and if you want high resolution, slow motion footage, this could be the camera drone for your film making.
You get F-Log flat profile with the Fimi X8 SE 2020 and HDR video as well. There are no similar profiles or video styles with the PowerEgg X, but this might come with a firmware update.
You can record in H.264 and H.265 with both camera drones, so you have this choice open to you for video file formats.
Both cameras are stabilized using 3-axis gimbals for smoother video footage.
Summary
Both feature packed, 4K video camera drones for aerial photography and film making.
It would be very hard to choose between the two on this comparison unless you had a specific feature that you needed.
The PowerEgg X can also be used without its arms, as a camera gimbal. If you were thinking of vlogging, or getting a Fimi Palm or DJI Osmo Pocket, you could get two camera styles in one with the PowerEgg.
If 4K at 60FPS is required, the PowerEgg has you covered, but if you need flat profiles and a larger sensor, the Fimi is the camera drone for you.
If it comes down to price, the Fimi X8 SE 2020 is just impossible to beat for the money.
